Description

One of the most unique and memorable tours you can take in Puerto Rico is to visit one of the islands three bioluminesent bays.  Closest to Rincon is the the bioluminescent bay off of the coast of La Parguera.  La Parguera is a small fishing village on the Southwest corner of Puerto Rico and is part of the town of Lajas.  If you are staying in San Juan, the most convenient bay to visit is the Laguna Grande in Fajardo. The luminescent effect in the bay is the result of a permanent population of tiny micro-organisms called Dinoflagellates.  These animals produce a chemical spark of light when disturbed in the water.  They can produce striking effects of green and white sparkles that can only be seen at night….and no, don’t worry – it’s not radioactive!

You’ll start off the trip with an introduction to the bay by your guides who will explain the natural phenomenon of the bioluminescence while you enjoy a light dinner of homemade empanadillas, soda and beer. Just after the sun goes down you’ll head out on a comfortable dive boat for a 20 minute boat ride through the mangrove channels, as you head to the bioluminescent bay.
