Bio Bay Tour

La Parguera, Lajas 00667, Puerto Rico (0)
from/per person 55

Description

One of the most unique and memorable tours you can take in Puerto Rico is to visit one of the islands three bioluminesent bays.  Closest to Rincon is the the bioluminescent bay off of the coast of La Parguera.  La Parguera is a small fishing village on the Southwest corner of Puerto Rico and is part of the town of Lajas.  If you are staying in San Juan, the most convenient bay to visit is the Laguna Grande in Fajardo. The luminescent effect in the bay is the result of a permanent population of tiny micro-organisms called Dinoflagellates.  These animals produce a chemical spark of light when disturbed in the water.  They can produce striking effects of green and white sparkles that can only be seen at night….and no, don’t worry – it’s not radioactive!

Kayak Bio Bay Tour La Parguera

kayak tour laguna grande fajardo bio bayOne of the ‘must-do’ experiences in Puerto Rico is a trip to the bioluminescent bay, this time with a kayak. The bioluminescent bay tour at La Parguera is closest to the West and South Coasts of Puerto Rico (about 1.5 hour drive from Rincon). You’ll start off the trip with an introduction to the bay by your guides who will explain the natural phenomenon of the bioluminescence. Just after the sun goes down you’ll head out on a comfortable boat for a 20 minute boat ride through the mangrove channels with the kayaks towed behind, as you head to the bioluminescent bay. Once you reach the bay you’ll spend time on a kayak to view the luminescence close up, with a chance to swim with the dinoflagellates, while you enjoy local fresh fruit and water provided before you return to shore. Gear and snack is included.

Fajardo Kayak Bio Bay Tour

This two hour kayak tour leaves from the Las Croabas launch in Fajardo Puerto Rico, about 45 minutes South of the San Juan metro area. You’ll start paddling just before sunset, heading through a thin mangrove channel that leads into the warm bio-lagoon. An informative guide will give you details about the ecology and preservation of this delicate eco-system. If you take the earlier kayak tour, iguanas and sea birds will guide your way into the lagoon. Paddle around the bioluminescent bay under the stars and the moon and watch as each stroke of your paddle lights up the microscopic plankton below.

*Please note: No swimming is allowed in the Laguna Grande bioluminescent bay.*
